Another Birthday Dinner

Monday was dinner with my parents,
Last night was dinner with Devin's family.
This time we got smart and scheduled dinner at 7 so we could get a run in before.
We were suppose to do 4 miles bit Devin didn't think that we would get home in time.
So we ran the same run again.
We did it a little faster this time but it was harder.
One of our walking breaks Devin said "this hill is harder than yesterday. "
First of all its a hill.
Second, we did it yesterday so your body is already tired from this run.
I told him that as a continue to do hills that it will get easier.
The run was awesome because we had the wind and the heat.
Running outside is never the same and I love it!
So many different obsticles.
Since yesterday I only did 3 miles,  today I am going to run my 4 miles.
I have today off to get things ready for California so my run will be in the middle of the day! Yay!!
But thank you Utah,  yesterday we were in the high 60s low 70s with sunshine.... today is cold and rainy.
I will be running on my friend the treadmill.
I'm going to take it easy on this one and just shoot for the 4 miles.

These are the details from yesterday's run

I wish I would have gotten a picture of Lyle.
We put his sunglasses on him and he wore them most of the run.
It was so cute!!
Happy hump day!!

It's only week 2, keep going!
Or if you're just starting out,  don't give up!
I promise it will get easier!

Monday Funday

Monday wasn't any ordinary day.
It was Devin's birthday!
He has been living on this planet for 27 years!
It crazy to think that we've been together for 6 years and married for 5!
Where does the time go???
He did have to work on his birthday which I think is wrong.
Everyone should have their birthday off to play, relax or just sleep all day. :)
After work my parents took us to Iggy's to celebrate.
Lyle did amazing and sat in his own chair the entire time!!
It was weird to actually be able to eat my own food without little hands grabbing my food or spilling my drink.
He was being a goofball like usual and was playing peek-a-boo with the waiter.
And he ate it up.
He even brough Lyle his own ice cream.
Which means I got free ice cream too!
After dinner I told Devin that we had to go running.
He hasn't hit the part in running that he actually has his own drive to run.
So I have to help him.
He tried talking me out of it but I'm sticking to my plan.
Hopefully this weekend in Cali I'll be able to keep it up too....
Maybe I'll even be able to rub my 'running drive' off on my sister and get her to run again.
I'll let you know how that goes.

What foods you eat definitely have an affect on how you run.
and so does snowboarding...
We started our run and my tailbone started hurting.
I told myself that if I stop the pain will still be there.
But if I kept running the pain would eventually go away.
And I was right.
I ran about a mile and a half before I stopped and waited for Devin.
We took Mya and she had a sticker in her paw.
We ran to the next turn than had to take a little walking break because Devin's food was starting to catch up to him.
We ran about another .5 mile and had to stop because my food started to catch up to me.
Once we were both good we finished the uphill to our house.
We ran 3.10 miles in 38 minutes and I'm pretty please with that.
After eating how we ate it should have taken us longer.
I use MAPMYRUN on my phone and love it.
It will tell you how far you've gone and you can also listen to music.
When you are done you can log your run and it will show you everything from calories burned to the elevation.
These are the details from my run last night:

I wish I could show you the elevation.
We stared out or run going downhill and finished going uphill.
We both finished strong sprinting down our street to our house.

Mya loved the run and catching up to me

I think the 3 miles was too much for Lyle.
He passed out the last hill before we turned onto our street.

When I woke him up to get him out of the stroller, he got mad at me and grabbed the straps and held them because he didn't want to get out and go inside.
Today I'm sore in different places than I am from snowboarding.
It's funny watching me try to walk when I get up from my chair.
I just laugh. :)

Happy Tuesday!
and
Happy "Work Friday" to me!
I have tomorrow off to clean my house and get ready for California.
I will go to the gym and get my daily run in.
Today's run is a 4 miler. woohoo!
We are leaving early Thursday morning and driving all day.
I'm hoping I can get a run in that night when we get there but we'll see.
I would love to take my 'rest' days over the weekend because we are going to the beach and messing around.

Friday's Run and Saturday's Fun

Friday's run was really late.
I had an awesome party that give over later than I though it would so by the time I got home I ate and passed out.
I did come home to this awesome surprise though!

It was a delicious salad and Frozen!
Best Hubby award right there folks!
Anyways, my run was an easy run Friday.
I ran on the treadmill doing 3 miles.
Walked and ran.
This time I only walked twice for a short period and I kept the speed at 6 - 6.5
I didn't want to over-do it since we were going snowboarding on Saturday.
I didn't do hills this time and kept the treadmill at a 2 incline.
Not too hard but still enough.

Saturday we got up at 6 to get everything ready.
Dev was going to donate plasma.
We got there about 7 and while Lyle and I were waiting
we played in the car with all the gadgets and buttons.

He loved turning on the windshield wipers.
He got so excited and would start laughing when he turned them on.
Dev finally got done, we met up with his brother and were on our way to the Canyons.
This was my first time snowboarding so I was shredding up the hills with my butt.
Literally....
My butt is purple and blue.
Anyways.
We started snowboarding at about 9:45 and Dev started teaching me how to do hill side.

Each run got better and better but so did the wipeouts.
I hit my tailbone twice and my 3rd wipeout was the worst.
I hit my hip so hard that I sat there and laughed so I wouldn't cry.
Some tears came out and I had to sit for a minute to let the pain subside.
I finally was able to get back up and continue down the hill.
But every wipeout after that I kept hitting the same spot.
My last run before lunch time Dev wanted me to try to do 'S's' with the board.
I couldn't figure out how to do toe side and I kept falling.
Dev tried teaching me toe side and kept getting frustrated at me.
When we finished that run I told him to go foo a run on his own and I'd take a break.
I didn't want to cause a fight and he was stuck with me on the bunny hill so I let him go have fun.
When he got back he was calmed down and things were good.
With us anyways, we avoided an argument. but my butt was hurting.
We walked up to the condo to get some lunch and the more I stood still, the more my butt hurt.
I was close to tears again.
I got some advil in me and cuddled with Lyle while Dev went and did some runs with his cousins.
We went up to the hill so Dev's aunt could see her son come down the hill.
While we waited Lyle loved running around and playing in the snow.

They were loving the snow!
He was laughing and running around in circles.
Dev came down the hill and Lyle jumped on his board.

Sorry ladies, this man is taken!
These two boys completely have my heart!
I absolutely love seeing Lyle being a daddies little boy.
He loves daddy and doing what daddy does!
And there is just something about Dev on a snowboard....mmmmm...
Anyways, I saw Dev come down and wanted to get back up the hill to show the hill who is boss.
I handed Lyle to Dev's aunt, called Dev, grabbed my board and got strapped in.
Dev met me at the lifts and up we went.
I didn't fall at all, even getting off the lift!
We had one more hour to run as many runs as we could and we took full advantage of the time!
It was so much fun and I butt didn't fill the wrath of the hill again.
I can't wait to get back up!
Even though it will probably be another year before we get up there again.
That's ok.
Dev was so proud of me.
Which I wouldn't blame him.
I did pretty good if I do say so myself. ;)

Today is a 'rest day' thank heavens.
My butt, inner thighs, neck, arms, shoulders... a lot of me hurts.
I'll get back on it again tomorrow.
This week my rest day is going to be on either Thursday or Friday.
I am going to Cali with my Mom so we will be spending one day driving.

Happy Sunday!

This was only the first week.
Keep going and it will get easier and you will get farther and farther.

Thursday Mind Tricks

Yesterday was hard to get out after a my 'rest day'.
Mentally it was.
I love running becuase not only is it physical, but mental.
My first half marathon I thought it was never going to end.
My second, I figured out the mind trick.
You know you can run 8 miles.
Once you've gone 8 miles you only only have 5 left and you know for sure you can do that.
Honestly the hardest part about a half marathon (since that is the longest run I've done) is the last mile.
You're muscles are tired, you know you are almost there.
You just want it to be over.
The only thing that keeps me going is the last mile there are peole lining the streets cheering you on.
First of all, it feels amazing to have people cheer you on and tell you that you are doing a great job.
Definitely a confidence booster.
Second, you don't want people you know to see you walking.
How emberrasing would that be. ;)
That's how I play the mind game.
Also I know that my hubby and baby are there waiting for me and cheering for me.
I ran the Ogden Half Marathon last year in May.
5 months after having my baby boy.
The new mental game that kept me going was knowing that around mile 8 I would get to see my hubby and baby boy.
After that I would see them again around mile 10 and then at the finish line.
Let me tell you about the weather during this run.
It was pouring!
There were streams going down the middle of the road.
One part we go through a tunnel and there was about 3 inches of water.
It was miserable at first and then it turned into the best run so far!
We didn't have to deal with the heat.
Once we got running the rain wasn't cold.
And then seeing my family kept me going.
This is Mandee and I at the finish.
It was freezing once we finished and we are completely drenched.
I actually ruined my headphones and now they will shock me every once in a while.
It was so much fun but mentally I had to have something to keep me going with 5 months post baby and the rain.

My run yesterday was not as bad as the half marathon but I had to play mental games with myself to keep going.
So I turn it into "I have to show off for my hubby"
It's a fun game and we talk through our run.
Yesterday we did just over 3 miles in about 40 minutes.
We stopped and walked a little more than usual  because Dev's knees aren't the best (he raced dirt bikes and they got jacked up) and he wasn't wearing his knee brace.
So we didn't push it too hard.
By our house we have some good hills so we still got in the variations that we're working towards.
When the weather gets really warm and our 3 miles are a piece of cake, we are going to start running trails!
I can't wait!!
We've got some great trails around here and I miss running them.
Tonight's run is going to be late because I have an awesome party to go to which I'll tell you about later.
Tomorrow we are going snowboarding all day so I'm hoping to have my run on the blog tonight since I'll be shredding up the hills with my butt tomorrow :)
First time boarding. Bring it on!
Happy Friday!

Wednesday Rest Day

So yesterday was a last minute rest day.
Which I didn't complain. :)
My abs are a little sore from running Tuesday.
Yes, my abs are sore from running.
When I run I keep my abs tight.
Sometimes my arms will even be sore.
It just depends on what muscles you use and don't use regularly.
Just because it was my 'Rest Day', it doesn't mean that I could be a couch potato.
I played with my son and ran around the house.
We had so much fun and ended it with snuggles.

Today we are going to run outside since it is going to be 60 degrees and it's gorgeous outside!
I love running outside because:
1. It's easier to change your speed
2. There are things to look at besides a tv
and
3. I can spend time with my hubby and baby.
I feel bad taking Lyle to the daycare at the gym especially when he's been at daycare all day already.
Plus we start and end at home so we don't have to spend 20 minutes in the car.

Sometimes it's harder to get started again after a rest day.
Everyone has a different reason.
Find your reason to keep going and keep pushing.

Where to run?

Yesterday Dev and I went to the gym and it was packed!
There was only one treadmill available and I wanted Dev to get started on his training so I gave it to him.
**It doesn't matter how you get your miles in, just finish.**
I jumped on an eliptical to get started.
I put it on random on level 3 for 20 minutes.
I love the random setting because it changes the intensity and you don't have to worry about it.
I kept a pretty good pace the entire time and did 1.50 miles.
I saw that a treadmil was open so I jumped off the eliptical.
Oh man!
Walking over to the treadmill was so weird after the eliptical!
My legs felt like jello!
I jumped on the treadmill, did the hills setting at a level 2, speed 6.5
Starting to run felt extremely weird because my legs were already use to the motion of the eliptical.
I bet if you saw me starting out my run you would have laughed.
I laughed at myself it was weird.
I ran 1 mile starting at 6.5 at 0.75 I moved the speed up to 7.
At 0.90 I moved it up to 8 to finish it as a sprint.
After I hit the mile I slowed it back down to a 6.5 to catch my breath.
I ran for about a minute than slowed it down to a 4 for a few seconds than back up to a 6 - 6.5 to finish my last half mile.
Between the eliptical and the treadmill it took me about 35 minutes to do 3 miles.

Below is the schedule I'm using for training.

Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
Week 1 off 3 miles 3 miles 3 miles off 3 miles 4 miles
Week 2 off 3 miles 4 miles 3 miles off 3 miles 4 miles
Week 3 off 3 miles 4 miles 3 miles off 3 miles 5 miles
Week 4 off 3 miles 5 miles 3 miles off 4 miles 6 miles
Week 5 off 4 miles 5 miles 4 miles off 3 miles 7 miles
Week 6 off 4 miles 4 miles 4 miles off 4 miles 8 miles
Week 7 off 4 miles 6 miles 4 miles off 4 miles 9 miles
Week 8 off 4 miles 6 miles 4 miles off 4 miles 10 miles
Week 9 off 4 miles 6 miles 4 miles off 3 miles 11 miles
Week 10 off 4 miles 5 miles 4 miles off 4 miles 12 miles
Week 11 off 4 miles 5 miles 4 miles off 3 miles 6 miles
Week 12 off 3 miles 5 miles 3 miles off 2 miles 13.1 miles!

I can't remember where I found this but it is the same training I used for my first half marathon 3 years ago.
Rest Days, especially for beginning runners or experienced runners but training for their first half marathin, it's important to take 2 days off from running during the week to allow your joints and muscles enough time to rest.
My rest days are more where I can do what I want, excersice wise, than runnings.
I'll go on a walk and take my son to the park.
I'm still keeping my muscles and joints 'warm'.
If I have to, I will change my rest days to work with my schedule for that week.
I usually take my 'rest days' on Sundays and Thursdays.
Dev is taking his rest days on Sundays and Wednesdays.
It doesn't matter which days you choose, just pick two and take it easy. :)

Here we go!

First run of the week was a success.
Similar to last weeks run but I can tell that my endurance is getting better.

I ran 3 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill.
I had it on the 'hills' setting to get the different levels.
I started running at speed 6 - 6.5 for about a mile.
Once I thought I was going to die I slowed it down to 4.
I walked just until I got my breathing back in check and went back up to a 6.5.
I varied between 6 - 7 until I got towards the end of my second mile then turned it up to 8.
I ran at 8 until I hit that second mile then went back down to a 6.
If I need to, I will take it back down to 4 after running at 8 but the 6 was good enough for me this time.
I lasted another half a mile and then put it down to a 4 for about a minute.
Doing the hills on the treadmill is awesome but man! It's work!
I finished my 3rd mile at a 6 - 6.5.
When I was finish I always stretch my muscles and use the back of the treadmill and the wall behind me for balance.
If I'm really feeling it, I will do walking lunges behind the treadmills as I make my way to the front to leave.
Make sure to have protein within 30 minutes of exercising to help build your muscles back up.
When you work out, you are actually tearing your muscles.
When you take protein, it helps rebuild that muscle which makes them bigger or more defined.
I can't drink just protein powder plain.
I will make a shake with frozen fruit, a banana, 1 yogurt(any flavor), ice and protein powder.
They are soo good!
If you don't have protein powder, scramble some eggs and there you go! :)

Last night was a "Welcome to Utah" moment!
Sunday was gorgeous weather with the sun out and short sleeved shrits on.
Yesterday was windy and snowing!
Ha! Only in Utah... :)

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome

Welcome to my new blog!
I will be adding a few more things to my page in the next few weeks and I'll let you know when I do and more about the additions. :)

I am going to be documenting my training for Ragnar.
and hopefully a full marathon.
I'm excited to work my way up to a full marathon and am nervous at the same time.
26.2 miles is a long way to run!
and 13.1 takes me about 2 hours!
Can you imaging running for 4+ hours?
I guess I'm crazy ;)
And it has always been a personal goal of mine to run a full marathon.
Tonight Dee and I are going to the gym so I will post my workout tomorrow morning.
I'm excited to get back into a routine!

Warning!

The blog is going to be under construction as I make some changes :)

Stay Tuned!

Within the next week or so I will be sharing some things that I am soo excited about!

In the meantime...

I have started training for Ragnar!
This week has been a little crazy so I haven't been able to run as much as I planned.
But I still got off my butt and got to the gym.
I ran 3.10 miles in 30 minutes.
I set the treadmill to 'hills' on the setting.
Yes I did walk when I needed to.
It was my first run so I didn't want to kill myself.
I'm just setting the pace for the training.
I dont' run just one speed either.
I try to make running on the treadmill as real as I can make it to runnint outside.
I will change the speed (running) anywhere from 6.0 to 8.0
When I need a break to walk, I keep it at a higher pace and will go down to 4.0.
That's more of a speed walk.
Of course you will want to customize this to your stride.
Mine is about average.
It usually takes me about a week or two before I feel comfertable with that run and then I will up the game. :)
It feels so good to excersice!
We have also started going on walks with our son to the park!
He loves being outside and we get the exercise for the mile (round trip) walk.
Plus the climbing up and down for the slide... :)

Have a fun Thursday and an even better Friday!
